The Teatro Carignano is one of the finest examples of the Italian-style opera house: an asset of the highest civic and architectural value, part of Turin's collective memory and the beating heart of the Teatro Stabile. Between 2004 and 2009 Base Engineering accompanied the restoration of this historic stage machine, weaving together respect for the fabric of the building and the needs of a theatre that had to keep working, keep welcoming audiences, keep being contemporary. The project covered architecture, detailed and construction design, and operational supervision: work that did not stop at the decorative surface, but reached the technical substance of the building. Restoring a theatre means dealing with strict heritage protection constraints, with an organism layered over time, and with the need to give the city back a living place rather than a museum of itself. Today, for Base Engineering, the Carignano is one of the emblematic projects of its Heritage practice: proof that care for heritage and technical rigour can coincide.

The Project

Overview

The recovery of the Teatro Carignano in Turin is one of the most significant examples of the requalification of Italy's historical and cultural heritage. Built in 1752 as the "family theatre" of the Princes of Carignano, in the heart of the historic centre and aligned with Palazzo Carignano, over the centuries the theatre became one of the city's principal cultural venues. The intervention, promoted by the Fondazione Teatro Stabile di Torino, involved the architectural restoration and the upgrading of the building services of the entire complex, with a twofold objective: to recover, in philological terms, the building's original architectural features, and to integrate new stage, mechanical and functional technologies capable of meeting the demands of contemporary theatre production. The project also expanded the services dedicated to the public, improved the comfort of the spaces and enhanced the acoustic performance of the hall.

The Challenge

The complexity lay in inserting state-of-the-art technological systems into a historic building subject to monumental protection, without altering its architectural balance or the stratifications accumulated over the centuries. The absence of space for external expansion - the theatre is set within a compact, fully built-up urban fabric - required a profound rationalization of the interior spaces and the optimization of every existing volume. In parallel, the conservative restoration had to restore a coherent reading of the building's different historical phases, from the eighteenth-century design to the nineteenth-century interventions. All of this through a particularly complex worksite that, in about two years, transformed a historic theatre into a modern cultural infrastructure.

Pre-Development & Governance

The preliminary phase was built upon a thorough programme of historical research and interdisciplinary analysis, indispensable for defining design criteria consistent with the building's monumental value. The study of the Carignano's architectural evolution was developed with the Politecnico di Torino - with the contribution of Prof. Vera Comoli Mandracci and Arch. Paolo Cornaglia - while the first restoration hypotheses matured in specialist studies coordinated by Prof. Arch. Marino Folin. The Fondazione Teatro Stabile then entrusted the final design, detailed design and Works Supervision to a Temporary Association of Professionals led by Prof. Arch. Paolo Marconi, of which we were part as technical partner, in constant dialogue with the Soprintendenza.

Systems & Technical Coordination

Design development focused on the complete refunctionalization of the existing spaces, integrating new stage-engineering and building systems without altering the historic identity of the building. The most significant intervention concerned the stage tower, redesigned to house a new-generation theatrical machine: enlarged grids, mechanized handling systems, a stage that is almost entirely trap-equipped. In parallel, a high-efficiency building-services system was developed, based on radiant climate control and heat pumps fed by groundwater. The restoration of the decorated surfaces - stratigraphic cleaning and conservative recovery of the gilding and the nineteenth-century apparatus - was carried out under the constant supervision of the Soprintendenza, within a process capable of coordinating architecture, restoration, building services and stage engineering as a single system.

Process Management

The complexity of the worksite required management by independent functional lots, organized to advance the different works in parallel and reduce overall timescales. The presence of the fire curtain made it possible to physically separate the works in the hall from those in the stage tower. The programme proceeded in successive phases: the recovery of the historic façade and the monumental portal, then the hall, the stage tower and the new vertical connections in the internal courtyards. We contributed to the final and detailed design and to the technical coordination of the different disciplines, maintaining continuous dialogue between designers, restorers, engineers, systems specialists and client.

Value Added

The intervention returned to the Fondazione Teatro Stabile di Torino a fully renewed structure, capable of combining the building's historic value with the demands of contemporary production: over 6,000 sqm recovered and a modern stage machine, competitive at an international level. For the city, the reopening of the Alfierian portico restored to the community an urban space of connection between the square and the theatre. For the public and theatre professionals, safer, more comfortable and technologically advanced spaces, where acoustic quality, restored decorations and new stage equipment coexist in balance. For us, a foundational experience in the refunctionalization of complex monumental buildings: multidisciplinary coordination, architectural restoration and the integration of contemporary technologies within a context of exceptional cultural value.
