Base engineering's role was to produce the construction and shop drawings for the extension of the Niguarda Hospital in Milan. The regeneration and extension project transformed the facility into a modern "Health Citadel": new blocks to optimise clinical pathways, preserving the historic architecture and increasing overall efficiency. The new Block is the heart of the new hospital, dedicated to high-intensity departments - 469 beds, 27 intensive care stations, 77 outpatient clinics, 17 operating theatres and 6 for cardiovascular interventional procedures, 2 MRI scanners, 2 CT scanners and 7 radiology rooms. A project carried out with full respect for the protected monumental buildings.

The Project
Overview
The project to requalify and extend the Niguarda Hospital in Milan transformed the structure into a modern "Health Citadel". The main interventions involved the construction of new blocks to optimize clinical pathways, preserving the historic architecture and increasing the overall efficiency of the structure. The new Block represents the heart of the new hospital: dedicated to high-intensity wards, it counts 469 beds, 27 intensive-care stations, 77 medical clinics, 17 operating theatres and 6 for cardiovascular interventional procedures, 2 magnetic-resonance machines, 2 CT scanners and 7 radiology units. Our role was to produce the detailed and construction drawings of the extension, at the service of the firm CMB, lead contractor of the tender.
The Challenge
Working on the Niguarda Hospital meant operating with full respect for and enhancement of the original monumental buildings, in accordance with the indications provided by the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage. A commitment that took shape in the use of "soft" machines for the demolitions and in a programming of the works designed to limit their effects on the functioning hospital - which never stopped operating - and to reduce the environmental impact on the city.
Pre-Development & Governance
The firm CMB, lead contractor of the tender, selected us for our operational capabilities and for the ability to form a dedicated internal team, able to develop the designs around the clock - including on site - in order to follow the worksite with continuity.
Systems & Technical Coordination
We created a work unit dedicated to the Niguarda worksite, operating both from Turin and from the site offices: a structure designed to guarantee rapid design responses to the needs of a complex hospital worksite, where the construction drawings must keep pace with the works.
Process Management
The process was managed by four professionals coordinated by a senior architect, in close contact with the firm and with the worksite: a compact team, sized for the decision-making speed required by a healthcare work in operation.
Value Added
The return of a renewed hospital is measured also in ESG terms: environmental sustainability, social wellbeing and ethical management integrated within the healthcare structure. A return that is not only economic: reduction of operating costs, better therapeutic effectiveness, greater safety for patients and staff. For Milan, a modern "Health Citadel" that coexists with the monumental heritage of the historic hospital. For us, the confirmation of our ability to serve - with dedicated teams and continuous presence - the scale and pace of large healthcare worksites.
