Camera — Italian Center for Photography
CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia opened in Turin in 2015 as the permanent home of a discipline that, in Italy, had long awaited one. Base Engineering delivered the refurbishment of the Foundation's premises together with Camerana & Partners: an intervention of minimal scale - XS format - but of full design density, spanning concept, feasibility study, detailed and construction design, interior design and construction supervision. The challenge was not to fill a space, but to make it capable of holding exhibitions, festivals and audiences without betraying the restraint that photography demands. The spaces were harmonised with the existing architectural layout, calibrating light, circulation and fit-out around exhibition requirements. The result is a place of encounter and experimentation that has hosted international programmes and quickly established itself within the Italian cultural circuit. A case that shows how, for Base Engineering, small scale is not a lesser exercise but a testing ground for the method.
Overview
The CAMERA Foundation - Italian Centre for Photography, at Via delle Rosine 18 in Turin, is an international exhibition and educational hub founded in 2015 to promote visual culture, articulated around three pillars: temporary exhibitions, the enhancement of archives, and educational activities. The project, curated by the architect Benedetto Camerana together with us, converted over 2,000 sqm of an old complex - originally intended for other uses, with university classrooms - into an international exhibition hub, transforming a long corridor onto which interconnected spaces open into a sequence of rooms dedicated to photography.
The Challenge
The challenge was to give a historic structure of classrooms and corridors, not designed for exhibitions, the functionality of an international-level exhibition centre - and to do so within a timeframe compatible with the opening in autumn 2015. The most delicate technical issue concerned environmental conditions: to host photographic collections of great value, the exhibition rooms had to guarantee precise control of humidity and temperature, within an existing building and with an intervention authorized by the Soprintendenza.
Pre-Development & Governance
The architectural project, authorized by the Soprintendenza, provided for the recovery of the university classrooms into exhibition spaces. The most important step of the set-up phase was equipping the rooms with the humidity and temperature control needed to exhibit significant photographic collections: a building-services choice that steered the entire development of the project.
Systems & Technical Coordination
We coordinated the entire project and its execution: in particular, we developed Benedetto Camerana's drawings into construction documents and, through project-management activity, implemented them with the contractor - holding together building renovation, structures and systems in a single, coherent process.
Process Management
The work team was deliberately lean: a single contractor carried out the building, systems and structural renovation works, with us acting as director between the architectural design, detailed development and worksite. A configuration that allowed rapid decisions and direct quality control.
Value Added
The social value of the CAMERA Foundation lies in its role as a cultural and civic hub: it promotes inclusion, visual education and social cohesion through the universal language of photography, with workshops, accessible programmes and initiatives for schools, museums and vulnerable groups, teaching how to read and decode images in contemporary society. It supports emerging young photographers through international platforms and scholarships, fostering employment in the creative sector, and acts as a hub of aggregation and exchange for citizens, stimulating cultural tourism and urban regeneration. For us, CAMERA demonstrates how an intervention of modest size can generate a cultural institution of international standing.
